AUSTRALIA INCREASES BASE SALARY FROM JULY 1, 2024

NEW MINIMUM WAGE RATES IN AUSTRALIA FROM JULY 1, 2024

New Minimum Wage: Starting July 1, 2024, the national minimum wage in Australia will increase to AUD 915.90 per week, which is equivalent to AUD 24.10 per hour. This represents a 3.75% increase. For employees working in remote areas, the minimum wage will be increased by an additional 5%, bringing it to approximately AUD 25.50 per hour. Other wage rates, including those for entry-level employees and apprentices, will also be adjusted according to regulations.

Application of Minimum Wage: Eligible Employees: The national minimum wage applies to employees who are not covered by award agreements or individual agreements, as per the Fair Work Act 2009, and is reviewed annually. Employees covered by awards or agreements are also entitled to receive the minimum wage, which includes any penalties and allowances stipulated in their agreements. These wages must be higher than the national minimum wage.

Annual Review: The Fair Work Commission reviews the national minimum wage and minimum award wages annually through the Wage Review process. Most changes will take effect from the pay period beginning July 1.

Employee Rights in Australia: Employees working in Australia should be aware of the following rights to ensure protection and fair treatment:

  • Minimum Wage: Wages must meet or exceed the national minimum wage. From January 1, 2025, criminal penalties will apply to employers who intentionally pay below the minimum wage.

  • Full Payment: Employees must be paid for all time worked, including meetings, training, and time spent opening and closing the business.

  • Payment Methods: Wages can be paid monthly or weekly, and can be provided in cash, by check, or electronically (EFT) to a bank account.

  • Deductions: Wages received are after deductions for income tax, 11.5% superannuation, Medicare, and other applicable deductions.
