Travel Tips for Laos

Laos is one of the Indochina countries and a friendly neighbor to Vietnam. It is often referred to as the "Land of a Million Elephants" or Vientiane, known for its serene and poetic charm, accentuated by the Mekong River, which remains relatively unexplored by international tourists.

General Tips

  • Telecommunications: Phone calls in Laos are relatively cheap. You can easily buy a prepaid SIM card at the airport or supermarkets. The country code is “856”. Area codes for various regions include: Luang Prabang (71), Pakse (31), Savannakhet (41), Thakhek (51), and Vientiane (21).

  • Electricity: Uses 220V - 50Hz AC, with commonly used plugs being two-prong round or flat.

  • Water: Do not drink tap water directly. Drink boiled water or bottled water to ensure hygiene.

  • Culture: As a Buddhist country, Laotians place great importance on cultural and religious practices. Dress modestly, especially when visiting temples and religious sites. Women should avoid wearing short sleeves or shorts.

  • Identification: It is required by law to carry identification when outside, as police may perform random checks.

  • Safety: Laos is generally considered a safe destination, but remain cautious in crowded places and late at night. Be wary of strangers, especially those who try to befriend you or ask to see your passport.

  • Hygiene: Cleanliness is strictly enforced at tourist sites. Spitting, littering, or urinating in public places can result in heavy fines.

Transportation

  • Arrival: You can reach Laos by air. For travelers in neighboring countries, traveling by land is also an interesting option.

  • Public Transport: Public transportation is underdeveloped. Taxis are available in major cities but are limited. Personal vehicles are relatively inexpensive due to low import taxes, so many Laotians own cars.

  • Local Transport: Tuk-tuks, modified from cargo vehicles or motorbikes, are common for local travel.

  • River Cruises: Traveling along the Mekong River is a great way to experience local life. Popular routes include Vientiane to Luang Prabang or Luang Prabang to Huay Xai. Boats usually depart in the morning, and prices are generally affordable but may vary seasonally.

  • Opening Hours: Stores in major cities generally open from 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday.
