Vietnam - Hidden beauty

Overview of Vietnam

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is an S-shaped country located in Southeast Asia, on the eastern edge of the Indochina Peninsula. It borders China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the East Sea and Pacific Ocean to the southeast.

  • Climate: Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate.

  • Terrain: The country’s territory is predominantly mountainous.

  • Resources: Vietnam boasts a wealth of resources, including forest resources, marine resources, tourism assets, and a variety of minerals.

  • Administrative Divisions: Vietnam has 63 provinces and cities.

What to Know When Traveling to Vietnam

1. Transportation and Traffic Conditions

  • Best Mode of Transport: Motorbike

In major Vietnamese cities, the primary modes of transport are motorbikes, taxis, and buses. For first-time visitors, using these options is recommended. However, to make things easier, foreigners should consider renting a motorbike from hotels or guesthouses. Rental prices typically range from 150,000 to 200,000 VND per day.

  • Crossing the Street: To cross the street safely, gradually blend into the flow of traffic, maintain a steady pace, avoid hesitation, and do not stop, text, or look at a map while crossing. Vehicles will adjust to your movement. Crossing the street in Vietnam can be challenging for any visitor.

  • Check Taxi and Guide Prices in Advance: To avoid overcharging, ask for the price of taxi services or guides before you get in. Although many taxi companies display their rates, it's wise to confirm prices to avoid any unpleasant experiences.

2. Currency

  • No Need to Exchange to VND: Foreign visitors do not necessarily need to exchange money into Vietnamese dong. Some stores still accept US dollars. However, for convenience, it’s advisable to have Vietnamese dong. The exchange rate is around 23,000 VND per USD. Be attentive to this rate to make accurate payments.

  • Currency Denominations: Vietnamese currency comes in various denominations, which can be confusing. To avoid mistakes, focus on the color and printed numbers on the bills.

3. Weather and Clothing

  • Prepare for the Weather: Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate. Summers can be very hot, so bring personal items like umbrellas, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Winters in northern Vietnam can be quite cold, so don’t forget to pack warm clothing. Ensure your luggage includes appropriate clothing for the local weather to protect your health.

  • Seasonal Clothing: During the hot, humid summer, you may leave jeans at home. In winter, especially in northern Vietnam, a thick coat is advisable. Check the weather forecast before you travel and consider bringing an umbrella for unexpected rain.

4. Passport and Communication

  • Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Vietnam. Vietnam's immigration authorities are strict about this, and if your passport does not meet the requirement, you might be denied entry.

  • Purchase a Local SIM Card: You can buy a Vietnamese SIM card at the airport. When it runs out, new cards are available at many shops. You can also use free apps for calls and texts if you have Wi-Fi access. Many hotels, restaurants, and even street vendors offer free Wi-Fi for customers, so feel free to ask for the password from the staff.
